This is sister #2 checking in with you all. Becca had a very nice list of her five top favorite harlequin novels. I'm not going to say that I entirely agree with her, but I will give her props for choosing The Eagle and the Sun for her #1 choice, as it really is the best of the best.
Anywho, what I want to focus on is my review for The Heart of the Sun, written by Bethany Campbell. Bethany is one of our favorite authors because she's writes about things that appeal to us ladies. This particular novel has it all, ladies: intrigue, suspense, an Australian hunk and pure stinkin' romance.
It starts out with our heroine, Kimberly, who left her big-city graphic design career because she was sleeping with the boss. The married boss. She returns to her quaint hometown, Eureka Springs, deep in the Ozark Mountains and promptly begins to help her Aunt Dodo run a bed and breakfast. There, she meets the moustachioed Aussie hunk Alex Shaughnessy, who is renting a room to do "research" on mountain folklore. Despite her attempts to thwart the mysterious Alex, the two begin a hot-and-heavy romance secretly behind closed doors at the b&b. Oh, and yes, there's a bitchy drunk other woman too. Who-hoo!
This novel is a great read and kept me interested from the start to the end. There is a mystery involved that goes all the way to India and involves Kimberly's nut-job now-deceased grandfather. There are definitely corny aspects of this book (as there are with all Harlequin books), but it's an enjoyable read.
My favorite selection from this book:
He kissed her on the lips again. 'Go to your room, love,' he said. 'And put yourself in order. You're rosy, and I've taken all your lipstick away. You look all too clearly like a woman who's been kissed.' Hardy har har!
Okay, go out and find this book. It's out there.
Oh, by the way, if you're an avid Harlequin reader and like the old school stuff, check out Ebay. I bought about 50 books for $5 once.
