Hello there, I'm currently reading Man of Power by Mary Wibberley, published in 1980. It starts out in England, where our heroine, Sara Bourne, has been staying with her evil aunt, two bitchy cousins, and non-existant-potential-mayor uncle. Sara's father had died two weeks earlier and so she had no choice but to stay with the evil aunt and cousins, who treat her like she's a slave, complete with keeping her in the attic.
In comes Morgan Haldane, a dark ancestor of a Cherokee Indian, who's father was a war-time buddy of Sara's father. He sweeps her away from her family because of some mysterious letter (which I'm sure will come up later) and takes her to Paris to get her ready for her job.
The job in question? Morgan's come up with this genius plan to have Sara pose as his fiancee so that his business partner's randy wife will quit coming on to him. Now, I haven't gotten this far in the book yet, but I know that there will be another woman in the equation, presumably his real girlfriend named Monique.
Anyway, Sara agrees to be his faux fiancee and gets all dolled up in gay Paree, complete with new wardrobe, hair and makeup. Even before her magical transformation, the two have already swapped spit several times and I'm only into the book on page 56.
I'm enjoying this Harley because it's set in France, and also because Sara's a firey lass. She's already slapped Morgan once, and he's doomed to have his mug smacked again because we haven't even met Monique and I'm sure Sara will be pissed when that happens.
One downside: she's only 19. They haven't said how old he is, but I'm assuming he's in his 30's because you don't usually find a man in Harlequin books younger than 30, or he'd be un-worldly and therefore, unattractive to women everywhere. Her youthful age makes it seem almost perv-ish. I'm wondering why a man in his 30's would fall for an immature 19 year-old, but then again, I'm thinking most men would fall for a young woman if she's showing signs of interest in an old perv like himself.
So, that's it for now, I'll give another update when I've gotten further into the book.
One other thing I thought I'd post: I just bought 10 circa-1980's Harlequins on Ebay. I think I may have one or two of those already, but I bought them for $2.50 + 5.00 s&h, so I think that's a steal. One of the books is by Bethany Campbell, one of our favorite authors! Woo hoo!
~ Kris
